The 80/15/5 Rabbit Dietary Rule Explained
House rabbits have uniquely adapted cecal digestive systems designed for continuous, high-fiber fermentation. Feeding an inappropriate diet (e.g. muesli mix, excessive fruit, or low-fiber pellets) is the #1 cause of fatal Gastrointestinal Stasis and severe dental spurs.
1. Unlimited High-Fiber Grass Hay
High-silica grass hay (2nd Cut Timothy Hay, Orchard Grass, Meadow Hay) acts like nature's toothbrush and gut motor. It must be provided in an unlimited pile at least the size of your rabbit's entire body 24 hours a day.
2. Daily Fresh Greens Rotation
Rotate at least 3 varieties daily (Romaine lettuce, cilantro, parsley, dill, bok choy, mint, basil). Avoid iceberg lettuce (contains harmful lactucarium) and limit high-oxalate spinach.
3. Controlled Pellets
Adult rabbits require only 1 tablespoon of plain extruded Timothy pellets per 1 kg (2.2 lbs) of body weight. Avoid colorful mixes with colorful rings, seeds, or dried corn.
